My image considers photographic claims of both veracity and historicity. “Clocks for Seeing,” a title borrowed from Roland Barthes’ description of a camera, takes a contemporary street scene from Palermo, Italy and attempts to confuse its place in time by manufacturing the look of a hand-colored slide. This work takes its form from William Henry Jackson’s lantern slide of 1895 that captures the junction of Queen's Road Central and Cochrane Street in what was then British-occupied Hong Kong.

The image on which my work is based is housed in the Library of Congress and can be viewed here: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2004707958/
